Mucuna pruriens is grown throughout India where the plant thrives in sunny, humid environments and the communities in these areas have tended to the plant for generations. The plant is a climbing shrub and grows vines up to 50ft in length with small, thinly stemmed leaves that are heavily grooved with pointy ends. The flowers are white, lavender or purple in color and the fruit is long and leguminous with hairy husks that encase up to seven seeds in their pods. Fuzzy hairs, that can cause irritation are present all over the plant but disappear as the plant matures and is ready to be harvested.
When the plant is ready to be harvested, the pods are removed and split open to remove the seeds. When the seeds have been harvested, they are cleaned, dried, ground and extracted 5:1 using pure water and ethanol. The solution is then chilled and filtered numerous time, resulting in a more concentrated product. After the mucuna pruriens seeds are concentrated, they are tested and checked for quality, dried, milled and sifted.
