New research from Bord Bia has revealed that one in five Irish people are regularly shopping for gluten free foods.
In Ireland, the gluten free market is predicted to be worth around €66 million. Last year, the market value grew by 36% despite only 1% of the population actually being medically diagnosed with celiac disease. The research found that gluten free diets in Ireland are particularly popular among upper and middle class earners. The key driver for adopting this diet is healthy lifestyle aspirations.
According to Bord Bia, whilst shopping for food, Irish consumers find it important that product information is clear and understandable on pack, the ingredients it contains, taste and finally price, indicating consumers are willing to pay for premium products.
Globally, the gluten free market is worth around US$3.5 billion. Each year, this figure continues to grow by 5% and in some European countries growth is as much as 20%.
